Overview

Guyaju Ancient Cliff Dwellings is a group of dwellings carved out of sandstone cliffs by unidentified ancient Chinese. The dwellings consist of 117 caves, each of which is equipped with doors, windows, brick beds, horse troughs, closets, cooking stoves, and kangs (a firebox that channels smoke under a bed). The dwellings resemble an ancient castle. The origin of the caves is still a mystery, which is why they are also known as "the First Maze in China."

Wild Duck Lake National Wetland Park is northern China's only wetland bird natural reserve. During the spring and autumn migration season, over 100,000 birds, representing 264 species, stopover at the park.

Day 1Guyaju Ancient Cliff Dwellings and Wild Duck Lake National Wetland Park

08:00-10:00 Your guide will pick you up at the hotel lobby and drive you to Guyaju Ancient Cliff Dwellings (100 kilometers, about a 2-hour drive).


10:00-13:00 Explore the caves and imagine how ancient Chinese people lived in these dwellings. Guyaju is generally believed to have been built toward the end of the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) by the ethnic minority Xixi (西奚). However, some believe they are relics of the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD). The uncertain origin and various interesting stories add to the mysterious charm of the Guyaju Caves. 



13:30-15:30 Explore the beautiful Wild Duck Lake National Wetland Park.  We will find a suitable place for picnic.  Then Immerse yourself in the moment of harmony between man and nature. The park is overwhelmed with lush reeds and beautiful flowers. When the wind blows, the view is impressive. Undoubtedly, your pictures will get many more "likes" on Facebook.
